A plant-based dietary approach to the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in South Africa

24 January 2024

PAN South Africa’s study, titled A Plant-Based Dietary Approach to the Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in South Africa: Short Communication of a Multiple-Case Study, highlights the transformative potential of plant-based diets in tackling South Africa’s diabetes epidemic, which affects over 4.2 million adults.

Conducted as part of the 21-Day Diabetes Challenge by Ubuntu Wellness, the study showed significant improvements among participants who followed a sugar-free, oil-free, plant-based regimen under physician supervision. These outcomes included diabetes remission, better glycaemic control, weight loss, reduced medication use, and enhanced well-being. The findings were published in the South African Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Click below to read the full study and learn more about these transformative findings.
